Skilled Migration to New Zealand

If you are intending to migrate to New Zealand under the Skilled Migrant Category provisions and wish to work as an optometrist you must have an optometry qualification recognised by the NZ Optometrists and Dispensing Opticians Board. Currently these are:

• BOptom University of Auckland, or
• BOptom University of Melbourne, or
• BOptom University of New South Wales, or
• BAppSc(Optom) Queensland University of Technology, or
• A pass in the current OCANZ Competency in Optometry Examination.

Once registration is obtained in New Zealand, optometrists are able to apply for a temporary work permit or for permanent residence in New Zealand. There is no requirement for them to return to their home country to lodge either a work permit or permanent residence application. Visitor policy enables a stay in New Zealand of nine months in an 18 month period; however application for a further extension could be made.

People wanting to move to New Zealand will need to meet a number of requirements to gain residence under the Skilled Migrant Category. These include health, age, character, and English language requirements.

Further information regarding Skilled Migration to New Zealand can be obtained from the New Zealand Immigration Service website.
